Juan Sánchez (b. 1954, Brooklyn, NY) explores questions of ethnic, racial and national identity, be it through painting, print, photography, video, or installation. Known for producing mixed media compositions that address issues of Puerto Rican life in the U.S. and on the island, he combines painting and photography with other media clippings and found objects to confront the U.S.’s political policies and social practices concerning his parents’ homeland of Puerto Rico. By doing so, he renders visible how his community’s struggle is connected to other civil rights struggles in the United States.
