Q3. What is the history of the print studio?

Established in 1998 by Eduardo Besen and Alberto Fuks, “Gravura Brasileira” is the only art gallery in Brazil dedicated to original prints and printmaking. One of the gallery’s original objectives is to portray historical and contemporary Brazilian prints exhibitions, as well as, to organize workshops and lectures. Visitors can also view our collection that has more than 4000 pieces by about 250 artists from all over the country and abroad.

Since its foundation, Gravura Brasileira has shown works by young and renowned artists, artist’s books and editions, rare prints from private collections and works by foreign studios. Our collection is a testimony of Brazil’s great tradition in printmaking.

Over the years Gravura Brasileira became a reference in printmaking in Brazil. Nowadays, the gallery welcomes artists, visitors, art dealers and curators from all over the world. We also keep exchange programs with studios and art centers from different parts of the world. The gallery was invited to take part in Art Fairs such as “Parte Sao Paulo” and “ArtFrankfurt” and to show its collection in international exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin, Havana, Heidelberg, Paris, Cardiff, Mexico City, New York, Oaxaca, Tokyo and Washington DC.

 

Q4. Over the years, who are some of the artists you worked with?
Evandro Carlos Jardim, Renina Katz, Claudio Caropreso, Renata Basile and Ulysses Boscolo.

Q5. What printmaking techniques does your print studio specialise in?
Woodcut and Etching (mainly), but also lithograph and screenprint.

 

Q6. If you could invite any three artists (living or no longer alive) to a dinner party, who would they be and why?

Rembrandt, Picasso and Andy Warhol because they were the best and most creative printmaking artists of their time.

Q7. If you could own any one particular artwork, regardless of value, what would it be (title, artist), and why?
Durer´s Rhinoceros print. To me it represents the power of art and imagination.
Q8. Who is your favourite artist of all time, and why?
Picasso, for his energy, his passion for art and his desire to experience different techniques.

Q9. What are some of the recent prints made by your gallery?
We’ve a series of new etchings by Jacqueline Aronis portraying a landscape seen from a train window with a sense of movement.
Q10. What advice would you offer print collectors in building a collection or simply buying prints?
I’ll advise all collectors to always buy what they love, to have a focus for your collection, to visit exhibitions, to read about art and printmaking, to visit printmaking studios, to talk to your gallerist and to meet artists in person.
