Meet the Printer – Wingate Studio, New Hampshire

Wingate Studio is a professional intaglio print workshop and publisher. Founded in 1985 by Peter Pettengill, Wingate publishes and produces original etchings, monotypes, and relief prints in collaboration with artists and print publishers. Focusing on emerging and established artists, Wingate follows in the tradition of skilled craftsmanship practiced by professional printmakers, while expanding the scope of our process to meet the needs of artists working today.

Our studio is located on farmland in the Connecticut River Valley of southwestern New Hampshire. The workspace is equipped to produce large scale color images using traditional intaglio and relief printing techniques. As skilled printers, we work in direct collaboration with artists to create original prints and multiples. We give careful and thoughtful attention to the artist’s ideas and practice, allowing time and freedom to explore options, and encouraging open ended, long term collaboration. Artists include Louise Bourgeois, John Cage, Walton Ford, Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, and many others.

Wingate Studio also works with print publishers, book publishers, galleries, residencies, universities, and museums giving lectures, teaching workshops, and printing editions. We offer a limited number of studio internships throughout the year to qualified individuals. Prints published and printed at Wingate Studio are in the collections of many major museums, including MOMA, Yale University Art Gallery, The Hood Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

The studio is currently staffed by founder and master printer Peter Pettengill, who began his career in printmaking at Crown Point Press in Oakland, CA in 1979. He is assisted by his son James Pettengill, a printer, artist, and co-founder of Bodega Gallery, Philadelphia. Publishing is by invitation, and we offer occasional contract work.

Wingate Studio is home to a large and diverse archive of prints it has published and printed since its founding.
