The paintings of Abstract Expressionist Alfred Jensen are based on complex systems of thought, from Pythagorean mathematics and astronomy to ancient Chinese and Mayan calendars. Jensen’s oeuvre is characterized by geometric order and symmetry, using bold, copious impasto color, often without the use of a brush. Common motifs in Jensen’s work are concentric shapes and checkerboards, rendered in unconventional combinations of color and resolutely flat. Occasionally featuring numeric symbols and incongruously informal cursive script, Jensen’s paintings connect his interest in ancient metaphysics with his innovative technique.
