Cliff Holden Biography

Cliff Holden (b. 1919) is a well known painter in oil, watercolour and tempera of landscapes and figure subjects, and an accomplished printmaker. He was born in Manchester, and took up painting in 1943, working in those early years with David Bomberg at the Borough Polytechnic. Cliff Holden was a Foundation member, and first President of the Borough Group 1946-48 at the suggestion of Bomberg. From 1956 he has lived and painted chiefly in Sweden, where his first one-man show was held in 1956. First English show held in Manchester in 1959. He is represented in a number of public collections at home and abroad, including The Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Arts Council, Manchester City Art Gallery, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and collections in Sweden. He was elected a member of the London Group 1961 and he is also a member of the Free Painters & Sculptors. He has lived in Marstrand, Sweden for many years.
