By Howard Hodgkin
Howard Hodgkin (1932–2017) was a British painter and printmaker known for his richly colored, abstract works that often bordered on the figurative. Though his art appears spontaneous, it was meticulously crafted over time, often painted on wood panels rather than canvas. Hodgkin explored themes of memory and emotion, and his brushwork and layered compositions evoke deeply personal moments. He received numerous honors, including a knighthood in 1992, and remains a key figure in postwar British art.
