Series: Gems [Illusions and Truths]
Arty-Fact: “These gems have life in them: their colours speak, say what words fail of.” ~ George Eliot
In this series, Jamie showcases a few of her favourite things – colour, disco and all things sparkly. She explores the play on light and shadow as the gems interact under an array of lighting scenarios.
With an inclusive casting, Jamie balances the mood and tone of a multitude of gemstones on multiple skin tones. From costume jewellery to fine jewellery, the juxtaposition of low-end and high-end is notable. As Coco Chanel states “a woman should mix fake and real.” Since a young age, Jamie herself has also mixed vintage with designer jewellery. From playful stick-on rhinestones to fine diamonds, Jamie illustrates how we can all sparkle and shine.
With Jamie’s love of disco and all things 70s, we can almost hear the music playing in the background as light dances from the gemstones onto her models. With multi-faceted images rich in color and life, the artist uses photography as her medium to speak what words fail of.
