Untitled from The New York Collection for Stockholm
By Lee Bontecou
Lee Bontecou (1931–2022) was an innovative American artist known for her powerful, hybrid sculptures that blur the line between painting and relief. She gained prominence in the 1960s for her wall-mounted works made of welded steel frames covered with canvas and industrial materials, often featuring dark, gaping voids that evoked both organic and mechanical forms. Bontecou’s art explored themes of war, nature, and the cosmos, resisting easy categorization. Her haunting, otherworldly vision made her a unique and influential voice in postwar American art.
