Description:

Maurizio Cattelan’s We Are the Revolution (2025) is a self-referential sculptural edition that continues the artist’s playful, subversive interrogation of art, identity, and authorship. Each hand-painted resin figure depicts Cattelan himself — slumped, barefoot, and suspended from a single nail — humorously transforming the artist into both subject and object.

A direct echo of his seminal La Rivoluzione Siamo Noi (2000), this edition parodies Joseph Beuys’ famed felt suit while inverting his statement, “Every man is an artist,” with Cattelan’s tongue-in-cheek response: “I am not really an artist.” The sculpture encapsulates his trademark irony and wit, bridging critique and comedy in a reflection on the artist’s place in contemporary culture.

“If you never thought you would be able to hang my effigy in your home, that makes two of us.”
Maurizio Cattelan

The Artist

Maurizio Cattelan

Maurizio Cattelan is an Italian hyperrealist ‘art worker’, now living and working in New York, USA. He is known for his satirical sculptures which manage to be simultaneously comical and serious. Cattelan is seen as the jester of the art world. This is exemplified in his first solo exhibition in 1989, where he closed the gallery and hung up a sign which read ‘be back soon’. In 1996, he was almost arrested for theft, as he planned to create a ‘readymade’ exhibition, using a collection of work from another artist under his own name. Whilst humorous, his works have an underlying critical nature, which make them unsettling and hard to forget.
