Miriam Tölke takes images from magazines or newspapers out of their old context and creates new meaning by combining them into new compositions. Faces and depictions of the female figure often make up part of these. The artist sources the raw materials for her work in the vast urban space of the city. Berlin offers paper treasures at every corner. Stacks of old books, magazines and posters, saved for decades, suddenly see light of day in give-away boxes in doorways. Wandering the city as “flaneuse”, observing the constantly changing atmosphere, Miriam Tölke takes some of these back with her to the studio where they often wait again for some time until they are needed.
