Description:
Rashid Johnson’s Little Boat (2022) is a cast-bronze sculpture that merges materiality with symbolism. Patinated in black ink, the textured surface is carved and scratched to reveal the frenetic faces and gestural marks of Johnson’s iconic Anxious Men. Embedded oyster shells reinforce the tension between fragility and resilience.
The work functions as both sculpture and incense burner, inviting activation through touch, sight, and smell. Johnson has emphasized the importance of “bringing the boats to life,” highlighting their role as sites of reflection and community. Conceived alongside his 2022 Sodade exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, Menorca, Little Boat is thematically linked to Johnson’s Seascape paintings and large-scale boat sculptures, which explore isolation, collectivity, and the metaphorical idea of “being in the same boat.”
With only 40 examples produced, this edition embodies Johnson’s exploration of autonomy and coalition-building, situating it firmly within his ongoing dialogue around identity, politics, and community
