Composition
By Pierre Soulages
Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a renowned French painter best known for his work with black, which he called “noir-lumière” or “black light.” He is most famous for his Outrenoir (beyond black) series, where he explored the reflective and textural qualities of black paint to capture light in innovative ways. Soulages believed that black was not the absence of color but a force that could evoke emotion and depth. His abstract, minimalist style and deep engagement with material and light earned him international acclaim, making him one of the most celebrated French artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
