Marilyn Minter Biography

Born in 1948, Marilyn Minter is a contemporary American artist, currently working in New York City. Her photorealist erotic imagery exudes sexuality and glamour.

Minter’s photographs are authentic in that she does not digitally alter or crop them. However, she does manipulate her images, in the process of transforming them into paintings. After combining the negatives in photoshop, she transfers the images onto aluminium by layering enamel paint.

In 1990, Marilyn Minter focussed particularly on beauty and fashion, although eroticism and sexuality still run through her work. She also began to experiment with film. Her first video, 100 Food Porn was played on TV to advertise her New York exhibition in 1990. She then went on to produce, Green Pink Caviar in 2009, which can became widely recognised from being featured in the backdrop for Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet tour.

Minter continues to have her work published in magazines, alongside working with companies such as MTV. Her Pretty/Dirty exhibition was the first place to exhibit her complete collection of works. Her paintings can be seen today in museums and galleries such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
