Golda Meir (FS II.153A)

Golda Meir was an Israeli teacher, politician, and the fourth Prime Minister of Israel elected in 1969. As Israel’s first and the world’s third woman to hold such a position in office, she was described as the “Iron Lady” of Israeli politics. Earlier to her reign, Meir was an active member Young Poale Zion, which later became Habonim, the Labor Zionist youth movement. This particular work was published as a gift for those attending the American Friends of the Israel Museum Beaux Arts Ball in New York.

Golda Meir (FS II.153A) as Part of Andy Warhol’s Larger Body of Work

Golda Meir (FS II.153A) was published in 1971 as a gift for the attendees to the American Friends of the Isreal Museum Beaux Arts Ball in New York. Warhol would later incorporate an image of Golda Meir as a part of his Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century, a series he referred to as his, “Jewish Geniuses”.

“One cannot and must not try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present.” – Golda Meir
