Andy Warhol created his iconic Marilyn Monroe portfolio in 1967. Warhol, fascinated with fame and celebrity, was captivated by the way Marilyn’s fame rose exponentially after her death. Based on a publicity photograph by Gene Korman for her movie Niagara, Warhol’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe Warhol immortalized the star in an almost propagandist nature. Her orange hair pops against the lapis lazuli blue background. The same vibrant blue is used like make up to accentuate Monroe’s famously seductive eyes. The silver used in her hair and facial features highlight the actress’s femininity and glamor. Marilyn Monroe was one of Warhol’s earliest celebrity muses and her portraits are some of Warhol’s most recognizable. It has been said that Warhol created an icon out of an icon.
