Camille Pissarro, French, 1830-1903, Les Deux Baigneuses, etching, 1994.  Signeed with estate stamp, Lugt 63e, and numbered in pencil, 44/49.

In a letter to his son Lucien, on 21 January, 1894, Pissarro writes “ I have just had printed two etchings of women bathing, magnificent, you will see!  perhaps too true to life, they are well covered peasant women – well covered with firm flesh! I feel they will offend the delicate spirits, but I think they are the best things I have done, that is, unless I deliberately deceive myself…”

The Artist

Camille Pissarro

Born in 1830, Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French impressionist painter and later in his life, (at the age of 54) neo-impressionism. He made important contributions to both the impressionism and post-impressionism movements. He did not have any formal qualifications in art. His father would have preferred him to continue working in his job as a cargo clerk but Pissarro took every opportunity, including breaks from work, to practice drawing.
