A remarkable impression of the first state, avec la lettre.

In early 1907 Nolde executed another drypoint of this subject (Schiefler / Mosel 61) for inclusion in the Zeitschrift für bildende Kunst, an art periodical. The plate wore out before the edition could be completed, whereupon the artist executed this plate (S/M 74).

There are three states. According to S/M, only impressions of the second state were used in the published edition, but the present impression disproves that assertion: this is clearly an impression of the first state, a flawless proof with magnificent burr that must have worn down quickly, likely after only a few impressions, forcing the artist to entirely rework the plate.

Printed on fine wove paper.

In perfect condition.

The Artist

Emil Nolde

Born in 1867, Emil Nolde was a German-Danish painter. Of the early 20th century painters, he was one of the first to explore colour with oil painting and watercolour. His watercolours are best known for their brilliant floras and vivid, brooding storm-scapes. In 1884 when he realised farm life was not for him, he studied to become a carver and illustrator.
