Sir Frank Bowling, 1934

Internationally renowned Modernist abstract painter based in London since 1953, Frank Bowling was born in colonial British Guyana.  As early as 1966 he often maintained studios in New York City as well as London.  Widely recognized critically since his solo exhibition, 1971, at the Whitney Museum of American Art and featured in the Venice Biennale, Bowling is the first Black artist to be elected Royal Academician, 2005, in the U.K. In 2008, he was honored by another exceptional award for his creative achievements:  the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This 2013 commissioned limited edition etching, Ahaahead!,  exemplifies the large lush, bright and painterly canvases for which his work is celebrated. His work is available from Hauser and Wirth. In 2019 Bowling was he subject of a hugely successful retrospective at Tate Britain and in 2022 opened a major show of works from 1966-1975 at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The Artist

Frank Bowling

Frank Bowling is a Guyana-born British artist. His paintings relate to Abstract expressionism, Colour Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction. After doing his National Service in the Royal Air Force, Bowling went on to study art, despite earlier ambitions to be a poet and a writer. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art, then in 1959 won a scholarship to London’s Royal College of Art where fellow students included artists such as David Hockney, Derek Boshier, Allen Jones, R. B. Kitaj and Peter Phillips. At graduation in 1962, Hockney was awarded the gold medal while Bowling was given the silver. Bowling had been tipped to win the gold but due to his controversial 1960 marriage to Royal College Registrar Paddy Kitchen he was relegated to silver.
