The old courtyard depicted here was a favourite subject of Raine’s. At the rear of an 18th Century house, it survived in Old Montreal until 1920. Another view of this yard is illustrated in figure 152 of A New Class of Art, The Artist’s Print in Canadian Art 1877-1920, by Rosemarie Tovell.

Herbert Raine (1875-1951) was trained as an architect in England and moved to Montreal in 1907. His practice was interrupted by WWI and he instead turned to drawing and etching, becoming one of the earliest serious practitioners of printmaking in the country. He soon became known for his views of Quebec and the parts of Old Montreal that were at risk of being altered. His etchings, which ultimately numbered over two hundred, also extended to England, Europe, and parts of the United States. The size of his oeuvre and his great skill as a trained draughtsman made him one of the most significant Canadian etchers of the early 20th Century.
