HR Giger’s Nubian Queen is a striking bronze sculpture that blends surrealism and fantastic realism.

The figure, with its elongated legs and pharaoh-like presence, stands on a hieroglyphic plinth, evoking ancient Egyptian mysticism. Giger, captivated by mummies during his childhood visits to the Rätisches Museum, was particularly drawn to the Egyptian princess’s burial, a mix of fascination and dread that would later influence his art. The sculpture embodies this haunting yet mesmerizing connection to the past, showcasing Giger’s unique ability to merge the organic with the otherworldly.

The Artist

HR Giger

HR Giger (1940-2014) developed a strong passion for the surreal and macabre as a child, and the need to express his powerful imagination drew him to the visual arts. Inspired by fantastic artists such as Gustav Meyrink, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Kubin, and H.P. Lovecraft, Giger’s paintings are typically in large formats, populated by strange bodies, wonderfully bizarre landscapes, and frightening creatures. This ‘biomechanics’ aesthetic, however, goes beyond art: it enters the realm of magic.
