1870-1963

Lewis Bauer was a painter, printmaker and notable illustrator. Born in St John’s Wood, London, he studied in St John’s Wood School of Art, the Royal Academy Schools and the Royal College of Art. In 1893 his cartoons appeared in the Pall Mall Magazine and from 1896 for the next fifty years he contributed cartoons to Punch. His cartoons depicted gently humorous scenes of middle- and upper-class life. Baumer was also noted for his “charming” portraits of young girls and contributed to the revival of the pastel portrait tradition. He produced in many other media, including oil, watercolour, gouache, and etching.

He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Pastel Society. He exhibited at the Fine Art Society and RI, also at Cooling Galleries, ROI and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
