Ice Age and Raw Earth are the latest in Manifold’s series of Iris editions by Marc Quinn. Published in a limited edition of 50, Ice Age and Raw Earth are both circular editions, accentuating the subtle gradations of the iris as well as the curvatures of the screenprinted map of the Atlantic.
In Raw Earth, the overlaid map is made from silver leaf, creating an etched texture reminiscent of geographic terrain. Raw Earth is a personal yet universal topography, with intricate retinal colour forming a moving ocean between continents.
As Quinn observes: “The etymology of ‘iris’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘rainbow’. And in the colours, even in quite subtle, dark colours, there is a kind of celebration of individuality.” Furthermore, “in the middle you have that black hole of the pupil [and] all of the mystery and uncertainty of life. It’s a very profound expression of the ambiguity which is at the heart of our existence.”
