This woodblock printmaker combines traditional woodblock printmaking with his unique style. Having begun as an oil painter of abstract works, Morimura is unusual in using oil-based inks rather than the traditional water-based inks. His images are usually of traditional real life landscapes, but he combines this with geometric and abstract patterns bringing a modern angle to the images. This work shows the 1000 red Torii Gates in Kyoto. His intricate woodblock carvings exemplify minute details. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

The Artist

Ray Morimura

Ray Morimura (b. 1948) is a Japanese woodblock print artist.  His background in abstract oil painting led him to use oil-based inks in woodblock printing rather than the traditional water-based inks.  His images are mostly of Japanese landscapes, but he is defined by his unique abstract geometric patterns which add structural freedom to an otherwise traditional scene. His works are in the permanent collections of the Fine Arts Museum, Boston, Universities of Maryland and Yale, and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
