Description: Julian Opie’s Ruth with a Cigarette 2 is a print that embodies the artist’s distinctive, minimalist style. Through bold contours and simplified forms, Opie depicts an iconic figure with an abstract face and pared-down graphic elements. The silhouette, with its cigarette and relaxed attitude, reflects a contemporary aesthetic and a sense of minimalist elegance. Sophisticated yet accessible, the work invites the viewer to appreciate the human form from a new visual perspective.

By using a reduced color palette, Opie manages to focus attention on the very essence of the figure, while playing on simplicity to evoke complex emotions. This minimalist approach allows for a varied interpretation, where each viewer can project his or her own experiences and reflections onto the work, creating a unique dialogue between artist, work and audience.

The Artist

Julian Opie

London born Julian Opie is a renowned visual artist who developed under the tutelage of conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin at Goldsmiths, University of London. He burst on to the British art scene during the 1980s with a series of painted metal sculptures and is known as one of the most significant artists of his generation. Opie’s work is characteristically striking, combining the minimalism of Pop Art with digital alteration. He uses computer technology to create graphic portraits from photographs, employing simple colours and minimal detail to create a piece that is both abstract but still recognisable. He employs a similar approach to the depiction of books, buildings and landscapes, using a range of media including painted metal, vinyl, LED lights and inkjet on canvas. Because his work has such a contemporary feel, it lends itself to popular culture.
