Tunji Adeniyi-Jones Biography

The art of Tunji Adeniyi-Jones are the result of what the artist refers to as “cultural addition, combination, and collaboration.” His technique is influenced by his Yoruba ethnicity, the mythology associated with ancient West African history, and his British birthplace and education. He currently resides and works in the USA.

His vividly coloured artworks are framed in a shallow, flat space that is reminiscent of modernist abstraction, particularly the overlapping planes of Cubism and the vibrant papier découpé of Matisse, as well as the stories and symbols of West Africa. The sinewy creatures emerge and disperse into the tessellating patterns and interlocking expanses of colour in these, which have abstract backgrounds of lush, stylized vegetation that cover the canvas surface.
