The Artist

Carla Accardi

Carla Accardi was born in Trapani, Italy. She studied painting at the Accademie di Belle Arte in Palermo and Florence. in 1946 Accardi moved to Rome. Here she met the artists with whom she would form the influential art group ‘Form 1’; Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo and Giulio Turcato. They sought to explore Marxist politics with abstract art, differentiating from social realism. Their first exhibition was in Rome in 1947 with Carla Accardi’s first solo show taking place in 1950.
