Description:
Zeng Fanzhi’s The Last Supper (最後的晚餐) (2002) is a rare lithograph inspired by his iconic 2001 masterpiece of the same name — one of the most celebrated works in contemporary Chinese art, holding the artist’s world auction record since 2013. The piece reinterprets Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper through the lens of post-Cultural Revolution China, depicting figures wearing Red Guard scarves that allude to themes of ideology, betrayal, and collective identity.
This lithograph translates the monumental emotional intensity of the original canvas into a refined graphic form, maintaining the expressive linearity and psychological depth characteristic of Zeng’s Mask Series. The deckled edges and textured paper surface reinforce the tactile quality of the print, while its restrained palette enhances the sense of tension and introspection.
Executed in an edition of just 89, each example is hand-signed, dated, and titled by Zeng Fanzhi. This work exemplifies the artist’s synthesis of Western art-historical reference and the trauma of modern Chinese experience, securing his position as one of China’s leading contemporary painters.
