Girl and Tree

“How sweet she is in her little Sorolla uniforn,
With her white collar and her dancing pumps!
She is outlined against a peaceful nighttime blue background,
Although starless, feet spread apart and arms crossed behind her back.
A single red note makes her arm bleed, wrapped in an armband.
Her plaits complete the tiny child’s symmetry,
With her broad “genius” forehead, like mine.
Beside her a shrub spreads out the latticework of flowering branches.
And yet the little girl also wears a plaster on her face.
So young, humanity with its fancy, its dreams, is already restrained within her.
Like the shrub she will perhaps only produce some meager blooms.
She is touching like another little girl, an Infanta,
Corseted in her case. in a farthingale, the duennas are not far off…
“She is holding a rose in her hand and is looking”.
She is blonde with blue eyes,
An innocent prisoner, like me at her age,
Like you, you poor child!”
~ Fernando Arrabal

The Artist

Zhang Xiaogang

Zhang Xiaogang is a contemporary Chinese symbolist and surrealist painter. Paintings in his Bloodline series are predominantly monochromatic, stylized portraits of Chinese people, usually with large, dark-pupiled eyes, posed in a stiff manner deliberately reminiscent of family portraits from the 1950s and 1960s.
