The sumptuous and skilful technique with which this charming fin-de-siècle image is etched make it stand out from the many representations of preening women created in this period. Parts of the print have the appearance of water-colour, other parts colour pencil, all integrated with great refinement. Rassenfosse achieves this through a mix of soft-ground etching and aquatint, printing it in colours from four plates. Throughout his career he researched new techniques for engraving and etching, some in collaboration with his well-known countryman Felicien Rops. He is thought to have possibly been the first to make multiple-plate colour prints from soft-ground.
Inscribed in pencil “Epreuve d’état unique”. A very fine, fresh impression printed on japan paper, full sheet.
