A pencil-signed proof before the edition of 275, annotated in the margin by Harold Wright of Colnaghi’s, who were likely the publishers of the print. The main steel-faced edition, unsigned and on a different paper, was used as frontispiece to Campbell Dodgson’s second volume of his Bone catalogue.

A brilliant impression with rich burr, printed on laid japan paper with wide margins. Apart from a slight abrasion to the right of the signature and minor cockling from old hingers in excellent  condition. Only one other signed impression has appeared at auction since 2010.

In the same year that he produced this print Bone made the first self-portrait plate, wearing the same hat, but from slightly closer. Also in 1908 Francis Dodd did a fine drypoint of Bone at his printing press.

The Glasgow-born Bone became one of the best-known etchers of his time, creating many strong architectural and landscape pieces. In 1937 he received a knighthood for services to art, which included his period as a War Artist and his role on boards or committees of major museums.
