Bill Brandt (1904 – 1983) was born in Hamburg, his father was British and his mother German. Brandt was raised during the first world war and later disowned his German heritage, claiming to have been born in South London. Shortly after the war finished he contracted tuberculosis and spent time in a sanotirum in Switzerland.
In 1933 Brandt moved to London and used photography to document all levels of British society. He also documented the underground bomb shelters of London during the Blitz.
