A striking portrait on Somerset paper with deckled edges. Mint condition. “It is a lithograph I made in 1984/5. It was commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation as part of their Artists as Printmakers awards. I made it just after I had completed the Arts Council residency at Sunderland Football Club. It is the only lithograph I have ever made apart from a couple of other testers I did at the time. The person in the print was called Stuart, I can’t remember his surname. The print was made in Newcastle. ….I always paint people I know. I know everybody in the paintings. I choose strong paintings. Mainly young people who don’t know what they are yet”.

Artist statement
I always use figures in my paintings. I use them to challenge the preconceptions we have about people due to media stereotyping. The paintings are concerned with identity, class, race, gender and the environment. This narrative is an essential element in my work, without a narrative I lose interest. I am however also concerned with the language of paint and the abstract nature of the process.
