The Artist

Chris Succo

Chris Succo (1979) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Georg Herold from 2003 to 2009. Herold discover- ed the extraordinary talent of Chris Succo at an early age and took him on as a master student. Chris Succo then went to London, where he studied again from 2010 to 2012 with Richard Wentworth at the Royal College of Art.
Chris Succo is known for his distinctive visual language that shifts between figuration and abstraction, refinement and roughness.Having worked in a variety of processes and materials his newest work eliminates any painting tools like brushes or palette knives and sees him working with his hands and paint directly onto the canvas. This direct appro- ach to the materials is in dialog with his vital involvement in music and writing where often only very few tools are needed for creation. As well as working from his own drawings, photographs and memories, Succo often references popular culture, literature, movies and music. These works on paper represent the materiality and visual universe of the new works on canvas the artist is currently working on.
Chris Succo‘s success is already evident during his studies in Germany, when First Floor Contemporary in Düsseldorf dedicated a solo show to him in 2007. Both nationally and internationally, his success is not long in coming: Further solo exhibitions in Berlin, Oslo, Geneva, London, Paris, New York, Düsseldorf and Brussels follow. Succo‘s works can be found in numerous collections. He has taken part in group exhibitions at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Märkische Museum Witten, Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf as well as in shows in Vancouver, Ramsgate, Prague, Milan, Paris, Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, New York. Most recently, he has been shown at Almine Rech Gallery (London & Brussels), Achenbach Hagemeier (Düsseldorf), Whitestone Gallery (Hong Kong & Taipei), High Gallery (Warsaw), Salon Kennedy (Frankfurt), The Journal Gallery (New York & Los Angeles). Chris Succo has received numerous prizes, awards and scholarships. Succo lives and works in Düsseldorf. He is represented by Almine Rech Gallery and The Journal Gallery.
