The print, built up with layers and bled to the edge, feels like a conte crayon drawings. Sultan’s Poppies are inspired by Remembrance Poppies, the paper poppies seen on wreathes or lapels, which emerged after World War I to commemorate those soldiers lost in battle. Eight layers of inks are combined with velvety black flocking to create a print that highlights Sultan’s sense of materiality and his fresh approach to the still life.
Yellow Poppies, September 12, 2013, works as a wonderful pair with the Red Poppies, March 21, 2012 or by itself.

The Artist

Donald Sultan

Donald Sultan was born in 1951 and he is one of them most influential and celebrated painters of his generation. He is also a printmaker and sculptor, notable for his oversized still lives and landscapes as well as the use of abstracted black forms against areas of bright colour. His paintings are abstract and representational alike. While he uses common forms such as flowers and daily objects in his paintings, their form is fragile and de-structured.
