From a set of six engravings representing the famous Triumphs of Petrarch. The 14th-century author’s lengthy poem was ordered into six allegorical themes or figures, each being honoured with a Roman-style triumphal procession. Written in the Tuscan language rather than a classical one, it was enormously influential and was illustrated in many different ways and mediums. In Pencz’s interpretation of The Triumph of Death, the stately progress of the other five triumphs (such as The Triumph of Love, also available here) breaks down in war and chaos, while the monstrous maw of Hell awaits.
The Triumph of Death, with its scyth-wielding skeleton mowing down men of every rank, is the most sought-after image of this series.
A good, dark impression with small margins. Inconspicuous pale scattered foxing, a central drying crease, otherwise in good condition.
