Joseph Sobel is an American artist born in 1986. Today he works and lives in Paris. Joseph Sobel obtained different diplomas that explain his diverse artistic practice: in 2006 he obtained a diploma in Printing and New Medias from the Ferris State University, in 2010 he turned towards photography at the Michigan University and Cranbrook Academy of Art. If Joseph Sobel has always been the youngest of his class, it is his work that seemed the most accomplished, both in its approach and methodology.
Before dedicating entirely to photography, Joseph Sobel was more an illustrator, mainly practicing painting. He used to be confined in his studio; it is photography that offered him a chance to come out. Nevertheless, the artist doesn’t regret this period of his practice, by which he managed to realise a great work of introspection, on himself and his vision of the world. In his photographs Joe Sobel tries to transcribe the idea of a proper and strong cultural identity. He quotes as his primary reference the documentary practice, almost the one of a sociologist, of Walker Evans.
