Laksamana Ryo (b. 1993, Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia) is a visual artist based in Yogyakarta. He studied at the prestigious Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta. Ryo’s work is heavily influenced by his childhood experiences — particularly Sunday-morning cartoons, manga, and popular culture. He uses bright colors, large expressive eyes in his figures, and an illustrative style that often references both anime and Western cartoons. Although his work appears whimsical and playful at first glance, Ryo often addresses contemporary themes beneath the surface — critiques of patriarchal society, questions of identity and gender fluidity, the tension between local vs global culture, and observations of industrial and labor life. He has exhibited extensively in Indonesia and internationally, participating in solo exhibitions such as “Ocean Eyes” (2020) and “Polah” (2024), among others.
