Larry Rivers Prints

Born in 1923, American Larry Rivers was a musician, filmmaker, actor and artist. He worked mainly from his home country, although he also had a studio in Mexico. From 1945-1946 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He was a student alongside Miles Davis, and the two remained friends until Davis passed away in 1991.

Larry Rivers was educated in art at the New York University, and would become known as one of the first culture-centric artists. Rivers was known as an innovator and was famous for pushing the boundaries of his era. He would employ completely different styles of art within the same piece to great effect. He is confident experimenting in a wide range of artistic media, including oil and charcoal on canvas. Indeed, he often combines both of these techniques.

He is possibly most famous for his work “The History of the Russian Revolution”, a photographic print created in 1977. The work was placed on permanent extended display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC. Rivers’ work has been described as Pop Art, and he is renowned for creating work that resonates with popular culture.He also worked in TV and movie production. Rivers died in 2002.
