Mai-Thu Perret Biography

Originally studying English Literature at Cambridge University, Perret works against an extensive backdrop of art historical and literary inspirations and drawing from this vast catalogue of influences, Perret addresses sustained narratives which revolve around ideas of feminism, modern utopias and the consumption of art and literature. An ongoing project, The Crystal Frontier, creates a fictional female Utopia, with artifacts, products and writings from this Utopian reality represented as works for exhibition. In creating a multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary work such as this, Perret brings ideas of feminism, capitalism and equality to a new understanding and so doing echoes the work of Hannah Hoch.

Mai-Thu Perret continues to live and work in her place of birth, Geneva, Switzerland. She has an upcoming show at the Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich, Switzerland, with recent solo shows having taken place at the Galerie Barbara Weiss, Berlin (2012), Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art, New York (2011), the David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles (2011) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2008). Past group exhibitions have included the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2013), Marian Goodman Gallery, Paris (2012), Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (2012), and the Venice Biennale (2011). Perret won both the Zurich Art Prize, and the Manor Cultural Prize in 2011 and she is represented in London by Timothy Taylor Gallery where she has had solo exhibitions in both 2008 and 2010.
