Don’t wear your shoes in the melon patch, 2022, is Mai-Thu Perret’s first porcelain object. It is modeled after a disposable plastic container for melon flavored ice cream the artist found in a Japanese supermarket.
Perret was fascinated by this cheap replica that mimics the form of a traditional Chinese lidded jar, and undertook to reproduce it in a much larger shape in the classic material of porcelain.
Reflecting on the impact of capitalism and over-consumption on traditional cultures, the artist has chosen to restore the noble aspect of this plastic commodity.

The Artist

Mai-Thu Perret

Originally studying English Literature at Cambridge University, Perret works against an extensive backdrop of art historical and literary inspirations and drawing from this vast catalogue of influences, Perret addresses sustained narratives which revolve around ideas of feminism, modern utopias and the consumption of art and literature. An ongoing project, The Crystal Frontier, creates a fictional female Utopia, with artifacts, products and writings from this Utopian reality represented as works for exhibition. In creating a multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary work such as this, Perret brings ideas of feminism, capitalism and equality to a new understanding and so doing echoes the work of Hannah Hoch.
