The year 2020 has brought many world-changing, paradigm-shifting developments, and we feel grateful to be here, and grateful that it has also brought us several new and exciting collaborations to the atelier. An important new one began with Maude Maris, which resulted in the release of a series of 6 luminous prints entitled Liminaires. We began in early November 2020, with Maude coming nearly every day during lockdown, and finished them just in time for her solo exhibition at Galerie Praz-Delavallade in Paris (through April 11).
As in much of her work, which the artist describes as an “architecture of emotion, Liminaires depicts plaster cast objects just a few centimeters high, but by truncating and tightly cropping them, she renders them incomplete and unrecognizable, suggestive of animal or bird shapes or body fragments. Her compositions play with opposites – representational / abstract, blurred / precise, opaque / diaphanous, tiny / monumental, ancient / contemporary… creating an intentional ambiguity, that is unsettling, and unclear what century it is, whether past, present or future.
