Lithograph on white mould-made paper. Edition 27: this impression 25/27. Signed by the artist, numbered 25/27, and dated 1988 lower right in pencil.

In this large lithograph, a figure in black marvels at the serene figures of two giant Buddha figures carved into the side of a cliff. To the left, a seated Buddha sits in front of curvilinear designs and repeated figures sitting crosslegged in a lotus pose. To the right of the larger figure is another figure, draped in robes, with a hand up — a Buddhist gesture of teaching or reassurance. Two caves dot the surface of the cliff, the edge of which is defined by sheer washes and fine lines. The transparency of the taupe ink mimics sandstone, while black shading provides delicate detail.

The Artist

Michele Zalopany

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes — family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation — when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
