‘Saturn’s Rings and Uranus’ 2014

Science Photo Library Print

The planet Uranus is the small pale blue dot at upper left. The blue colour is due to the optical effects of methane gas in its atmosphere. The outer portion of Saturn’s A ring is at bottom right. The thin bright ring cutting across centre is Saturn’s F ring. Saturn’s ring system consists of thousands of rock and ice chunks. Here, Uranus is around 4.29 billion kilometres from Saturn. This narrow-angle view, from the Imaging Science Subsystem of the Cassini Orbiter, was obtained on 11 April 2014. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
