A UNIQUE SHEET, WITH NINE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PLATES FROM THE "DOMESTIC SCENES". In 1980 William Kentridge executed the "Domestic Scenes", a series of 50 untitled small mixed etchings. These, along with the "Pit" monotypes, represent the earliest crystallization of his artistic persona and the first step in his career as a professional artist. At first he experimented by printing four or more plates on the same sheet, using his favorite plates from the series. Each of these sheets is unique. Six such sheets are known to exist: three with four plates, and one each with six, nine, and sixteen plates. Eventually he abandoned the idea and printed only one plate on each sheet. THIS IS THE UNIQUE SHEET WITH NINE PLATES. Signed by the artist. A small tear has been professionally repaired. Otherwise the sheet is in perfect condition. This print comes from the collection of one of the earliest collectors of Kentridge's work, who recognized the artist's importance long before he became famous. See William Cole, "On Some Early Prints by William Kentridge", in Print Quarterly (vol. XXVI, no. 3), pp. 268-273.
