A UNIQUE SHEET, WITH NINE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PLATES FROM THE “DOMESTIC SCENES”.

In 1980 William Kentridge executed the “Domestic Scenes”, a series of 50 untitled small mixed etchings. These, along with the “Pit” monotypes, represent the earliest crystallization of his artistic persona and the first step in his career as a professional artist.

At first he experimented by printing four or more plates on the same sheet, using his favorite plates from the series. Each of these sheets is unique. Six such sheets are known to exist: three with four plates, and one each with six, nine, and sixteen plates. Eventually he abandoned the idea and printed only one plate on each sheet.

THIS IS THE UNIQUE SHEET WITH NINE PLATES.

Signed by the artist.

A small tear has been professionally repaired. Otherwise the sheet is in perfect condition.

This print comes from the collection of one of the earliest collectors of Kentridge’s work, who recognized the artist’s importance long before he became famous.

The Artist

William Kentridge

William Kentridge is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. These are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. In his drawings and animations, William Kentridge articulates the concerns of post-Apartheid South Africa with unparalleled nuance and lyricism. In the inventive process by which he created his best-known works, Kentridge draws and erases with charcoal, recording his compositions at each state. He then displays a video projection of the looped images alongside their highly worked and re-worked source drawings.
