The Wonderful World of the Woodblock Print

A guest curated show by David Whitley, Owner of The Whitley Art Gallery, Ireland

“Woodblock Printing is one of the earliest forms of `mass production printing` and the earliest known example was printed on silk in China pre-220AD. The various techniques of Woodblock or Woodcut (as it is often called in the West) printing have intrigued artists from the East & West for the Centuries ever since. Albrecht Durer is the first well known artist from the West to show the great beauty that can be achieved when an artist of real vision works with truly skilled craftsman producing prints that were influential in his time and remain so today. From the East the great artists of the Japanese Edo period such as Utamaro, Hokusai and Hiroshige created some iconic images that dazzled the West and influenced the birth of `Modern Art` through Whistler, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin (who carved his own Woodcuts), Munch and the list goes on…

Here is a very  small, reasonably contemporary selection showing some of the possible variety of Woodcuts, all for sale through Printed Editions and all priced so that you are in no doubt as to what price the relevant Gallery is asking. We hope that you enjoy them.”
