ME and THE is a fore-edge book, with printing that appears when the gilt edge is fanned one way or another. Fore-edge painting was popular in the 18th century but rarely used today. Graphicstudio research encompasses the recapture and revitalization of such technology, enabling the development of fore-edge printing. The pages of the book are blank, perhaps a commentary on the meanings we would ascribe, or fail to ascribe, to such seemingly simple words.

When the book pages are fanned in one direction the text ME appears. When the book pages are fanned in the opposite direction the text THE appears.

The Artist

Ed Ruscha

American artist Ed Ruscha is a pioneer of the 1960’s Pop Art movement known for his signature ‘word paintings’, which incorporate text with images of landscapes. Ruscha studied art in Los Angeles after moving from Omaha, Nebraska in 1956 where he explored a variety of media including painting, collage, printmaking, photography and drawing. His work conflates many influences from Jasper John’s Target with Four Faces (1958), to Pop Artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. His renowned piece OOF, encapsulates popular culture, cartoons and comic strips he drew upon.
