Artwork details

Title
Gateway With Setting Sun (black and white version)
Description

Graham Vivian Sutherland (born August 28, 1903 in Streatham, London, England, UK, died February 17, 1980 in South End Green, London, England, UK.) was a titan of British Modernism and possessed the rare ability to transform the familiar  contours of the natural world into something profoundly unsettling and deeply spiritual.

This Gateway and Setting Sun work was printed by Siro Teodorani, Milan (with their blind stamp on the sheet)... but obviously printed posthumously {in two versions, both are available), since Sutherland had died in 1980. Presumably the last print in his oeuvre. It was  published posthumously on the anniversary of Graham Sutherland’s death in 1981. The edition size of this black and white version is just 26, as indicated by the lettering A-Z in pencil. Also in the lower margin is a facsimile of Sutherland's initials, date and title. Printed on best quality paper, and housed in the original card folder from the publishers. Near immaculate, very slight yellowing of margins of card folder. Otherwise virtually as new.

The Artist

Graham Sutherland

British artist Graham Sutherland who worked with both glass and fabric to create prints and portraits. His core inspirations included religion (he designed the giant central tapestry for in the rebuild of Coventry Cathedral) and the works of Paul Nash, Samuel Palmer and Pablo Picasso. Working initially in watercolour and later oils, Sutherland spent the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s painting romantic, sometimes surreal British landscapes – one of his favourite places to paint was the Pembrokeshire coast, calling it the place he “began to learn painting”.
