Created as a screenprint in colors by Jean Dubuffet in 1973, Epiphanor is from the Présences Fugaces series, is hand-monogrammed, dated and numbered in pencil and measures 29 ¾ x 21 7/8 in (76 x 56 cm), unframed.  From the edition of 100, this artwork is noted as Webel 1163 in the artist’s catalogue raisonne.   Présences Fugaces is characterised by Dubuffet’s interest in spontaneous and ephemeral human expressions, Epiphanor portraying an abstracted figure, deconstructed into interlocking irregular, that embody Dubuffet’s interest in the raw, unrefined aspects of human existence and for the artist, conveys a sense of immediacy and urgency reflecting his philosophical musings on the transient nature of human emotions.

The Artist

Jean Dubuffet

Jean Debuffet was born in Le Havre, France. In 1918 he went to Paris to study painting at the Academie Julian but left after sixth months to work independently. By 1924 he had given up on art and took over his father’s wine business, not painting again until 1933. He began to produce masks and puppets, but this bout of creativity was short-lived and it was not until 6 years later that Debuffet dedicated himself to a career in art.
