The Judy’s Glass Lily sculpture edition expands on Judy Chicago’s recent series, in which the lily emerges as a powerful symbol of motherhood and rebirth. Since ancient Greece, the flower and the Goddess have been closely linked, echoing one another, with numerous deities depicted holding lilies. The imagery conveys purity, spiritual enlightenment, and faith.
Throughout Chicago’s practice, both the Goddess and flower motif have held a central place, serving as a symbol of femininity, renewal, and power— from The Dinner Party to her early “Through the Flower” paintings. Most recently, she began exploring the historic attributes of the lily, transforming the flower into large-scale sculptures for her Smoke Sculpture, An Homage to Arles, presented at the Luma Foundation in Arles.
