Monotype on Rives BFK paper. “Malibu (#7 Blue + Brown)” is from a group of monotypes Ledgerwood made at Riverhouse Editions in 1997. It is a good example of the limited palette and circular motif abstraction she employed prior to 2002, when she shifted to the high-key color and patterned abstraction she is known for today. The dimensions of the print are 30″ x 22 1/4″. The print is hinged with linen tape hinges to museum board and floated in a fabric-covered window mat. The dimensions of the mat are 37″ x 29″. The Riverhouse Editions blindstamp is impressed in the lower margin. A frame is included: metal sectional Nielsen frame in silver, glazed with acrylic.

The Artist

Judy Ledgerwood

Judy Ledgerwood is a contemporary artist based in Chicago. Since the 1980’s she has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. She combines decorative patterning, elements of textile design and other traditionally female crafts, with bold color and assertive brush strokes, traits associated with the historically male-dominated tradition of gestural abstraction. Often using stereotypically “feminine” elements, such as pastel colors and stylized floral patterns, Ledgerwood merges formalist and feminist concerns in works that are both sensual and subversive, with the ability to resonate beyond their initial impact.
